PEAK OF THE RUT!

Every October I try to get away from the confines of the office and get outside to enjoy the beautiful weather, the fall colors, and all that the Ozarks has to offer during this glorious season!  One thing I highly recommend to all our guests is a day trip to Boxley Valley or Lost Valley to view the elk herds.  This week they are in the peak of the rutting season and for those of you that don't know what that means- it involves determining which male elk gets to mate with the female elks- SO there is a lot of noise & wild fighting going on!
If you can manage to get away from YOUR office- there is a very handy guide put out by the Buffalo River Chamber of Commerce which shows up-to-date locations of the herds and info to ensure you get a good look and the best photo ops.

On Thursday, August 4th, Arkansas State University at Jonesboro will host a music festival featuring various members of Johnny Cash's family as well as other accomplished country musicians to celebrate The Man in Black's Life and Music.

Ticket proceeds will go to restoring and preserving Johnny Cash's childhood home in Dyess, Arkansas. There are plans to restore a local New Deal era building as a museum and reconstruct a former theater to play an orientation film and documentaries about Cash's life.

Free Fishing Weekend in Arkansas

Once again, its that time of year when the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission puts aside its boats and binoculars in order to let the people FISH!

Any resident or non-resident is allowed to fish in Arkansas this weekend without a fishing license or trout permit.

The Free Fishing Weekend starts at noon this Friday, June 10th and goes 'til 12:00 am on Sunday the 12th, (just in case any of you license-less, night owl, diehard fishing insomniacs want to hit the river at midnight...)

Now, just cause its free, you can't get crazy...regulations for length, slot limit and daily limit still apply.

In any case, Free Fishing Weekend couldn't have come at a better time for White Buffalo. Generation on the White River has slowed way down this week- only six generators and ZERO floodgates! The high water has had the fish all stirred up and biting like crazy.

So if you haven't gotten away yet, and the heat hasn't melted your brain, this might be the weekend to dust off your tacklebox and head for the river.

Leave your wallet at home!

California Loves Arkansas.

A few weeks ago some family friends came out from California to stay with us for the first time. Here's some thoughts on the Ozarks from one of the girls. You can read the original post in her blog here:

"Aux Arks

Well I am in love.

Having just returned from my sojourn at The White Buffalo Resort, I must say how very impressed and not a little affected I was by my experience there. The simple beauty of the trees and rivers, the number of animals--ranging from armadillos and box turtles to squirrels, foxes and deer--that roam freely, and the sweeping peace of the place really showcases some of the highlights of the marvelous country that stretches throughout parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas, known as The Ozarks.

Unfortunately, I must say that my bad luck with cameras has struck once again, and I broke mine and Leah's camera on my very first day at the resort. (What is that, Leah? Number 5?) Therefore, I have no photos to display as documentation of our lovely trip.

I will say, however, that on returning home, I swiftly googled The Ozarks to find out more, and found some pretty interesting stuff. For example, that the word "Ozarks" is thought to be derived from a linguistic corruption of the French abbreviation "Aux Arks," (short for "of Arkansas"). Or that is was an abbreviation for "aux-arcs-en-ciel," French for "towards the rainbows", which are common sights in the region. (thanks, wikipedia.)

Current River Conditions

So many of our friends and customers are calling to ask "How are You?" and "How's the River?" that I am posting this report as of today 4-15-08.

Bull Shoals Dam is at & over capacity with a level of 695.02 feet. They have all 8 units generating with emergency spillways online which is equivalent to 2 extra units or 5,625 csf of water. The Corp of Engineers is managing the water so as not to add to the complications downriver at Norfork Dam. They closed the emergency spillway gates at Norfork today at 3:00 p.m.

The White River is running high and fast but has a long way to go before exceeding the banks. We are encouraging our guests to allow us to arrange for guides who are familiar with high water fishing and are experienced boatsmen.

The weather is beautiful today but there is a storm out west that will either split and miss us or bring more showers.

Guests who came right after the March flood said the fishing was never so good.

If we could predict anything beyond what we know today...but we all know that's not possible. These are unprecedented conditions. That's about all we can say with assurance.
